Menomonie Art & Culture

OVERVIEW

This project involved creating a mobile field guide app for UW Stout’s campus and the surrounding area to encourage discovery, the experience of navigating through the Menomonie area, and establishing a stronger sense of place and identity.

By identifying the topic of art and culture within the Menomonie and UW Stout campus area, I researched and created a navigation system supporting these locations and allowing users better access to them. This app highlights these locations within an interactive platform that offers user friendly opportunities.

The Process

As the primary step in the design process, I analyzed a few competitive resources in order to gain a deeper insight into the industry landscape - examining apps or websites that offered valuable features, as well as resources accessible to students in the current locale.

While looking into these applications that aligned with my app objectives, I found a spectrum of strengths and weaknesses inherent to each. The main observation was the absence of a cohesive sense of community within most existing applications, specifically in their limited reach and smaller-scale engagements. Recognizing this gap, I found an opportunity to carve out a niche where users could delve deeper into art within their local community through a more user friendly navigation platform. This platform would not only encourage learning about art but also streamline navigation to these local art spaces, fostering a stronger sense of connection and engagement with users.

Pain Points & User Personas

Creating a user persona based on identified pain points allowed me to outline the specific demographics and characteristics of the target user. By capturing these specific insights, the user persona became a tangible representation of how these individuals are most likely to benefit from a navigation platform such as this.

Outlined here is a user persona with correlating goals and needs who might utilize this platform.

Ideation & Design

Prioritizing specific features and defining a direction, I created an information architecture. Developing a sitemap provided a comprehensive view of the user journey within the app, serving as the foundational step in designing the navigation layout for the platform.

Creating a mobile wireframe layout for the app was the following step in the design process. These depicted the arrangement of all components in the information architecture.

Developing a cohesive visual language and design system brought all elements together to realize a user-friendly navigation platform. The final visual design facilitates easy app navigation, featuring a dark theme with deep gradients that harmonize with the vibrant artwork showcased within the app. This aesthetic choice enhances the overall user experience, creating a visually engaging and intuitive journey through the application.

The Experience

Using Figma to make this prototype come to life, each of the elements came together for a cohesive mobile experience.
